You need the HD for a memory card is not large enough to contain all the files downloaded for Final Fantasy XI. Online MMORPG as the XI should regularly due to the many changes that had to be updated in the game. Without hard drive to store these updates (the disk obviously can not even burn, and issue a new volume every time the game would be too expensive), the game will not work with all other compatible that would be all downhill. Sorry, but you have to pony up $ for the HD.
